Discover one of Yunnan’s most remarkable living crafts: the traditional making of Dongba paper. Handmade by the Naxi people in the mountains around Lijiang, this ivory-colored, textured paper is closely connected to Dongba culture, ritual manuscripts, and the pictographic writing of the Naxi tradition.
For generations, Dongba paper was used by Dongba priests to record sacred texts, rituals, and symbols. Made from the bark of wild shrubs such as Wikstroemia, each sheet reflects patient craftsmanship, local knowledge, and a deep cultural heritage.
By taking part in this activity during your China tour, you help support the continuation of this tradition. Your participation encourages local communities to train younger generations in the craft, so they can preserve these skills and share them with visitors in an authentic way. This means that while you enjoy a meaningful cultural experience, you also contribute to keeping an important local tradition alive.
